This newer American variety is a cross of Hallertauer Mittelfruh, U.S. Tettnanger, East Kent Golding, Bavarian, Brewers Gold, and other unknown hops. It has a heavy citrus aroma and flavor, hints of tropical fruits. Still very new, it is gaining favor as an all purpose hop. Lots of descriptors out there:Ā Citrus, peach, apricot, passion fruit, grapefruit, lime, melon, gooseberry, lychee fruit, pineapple, mango, papaya and other tropical fruit flavors and aromas.Ā
First impressions are a very lively and lifted lemon and lime followed by a background of tropical fruit. This variety displays similarities to its Saazer parent through its levels of Farnesene typically around the 12 % mark however the higher alpha also makes this hop more desirable in dual purpose applications. It imparts a balanced bitterness as well as a desirable new world ānobleā type aroma. An excellent hop in many applications from first kettle additions through to late gift.Ā This hop offers a unique aroma and flavour making it suitable for producing bigger more traditional style Lagers, especially Bohemian Pilsener. Excellent when employed in multiple additions from a single hop bill and sits well on the palate to balance speciality malt sweetness. An excellent variety for Belgian Ales and gives a real edge to Cask Bitter.
This variety is the most recent release out of the New Zealand Hop Research Programme selected on its average alpha of 12-14% with Cohumulone in the region of 24% and an excellent oils profile. The aroma of this hop is described as āboldā as it delivers a herbal infusion of fresh citrus and crushed black pepper. Brewing trials have illustrated Pacific Jade as an excellent hop that delivers a pleasing soft bitterness matched to desirable aroma characteristics. Suited for use as a bittering hop with some excellent results also being seen in dual purpose applications, with a soft bitterness attributable to the low cohumulone. The citrus aroma and flavour notes work well to temper malt sweetness in āfullishā Ales especially when used moderately as a finishing hop. Pacific Jade is also well suited to balance dryer Lager styles when employed as an āup-frontā kettle addition to showcase its bittering qualities.

The Pacifica brings something of a blend of new and old-world taste descriptors to the brewers forum. Orange marmalade aptly describes the citrus aroma notes achieved through late addition.Ā Bittering quality is such that early kettle additions net a soft yet solid finish even in highly bittered beers.
The aroma is characterised by a heady mix of lemon peel and pine needles layered beneath the clean spiciness which typifies this New Zealand alpha selection. The Southern Cross has an excellent essential oil profile and low Cohumulone while producing consistent levels of Alpha acid. Used for first addition bittering this hop has no pretence at substitution for noble type. A kettle variety of the highest order Southern Cross imparts a soft bitterness with a subtle resinous quality. The essential oil component is such that it can deliver a delicate balance of citrus and spice when added toward the end of boil. Generally selected for its consistency in mainstream Lagers this hop has also ventured into the craft market as a reliable Brewpub mainstay.
